Soldiers take over streets, tension Mounts as ENDSARS protest intensifies

Soldiers have been deployed to the streets of Abuja to arrest the escalating #ENDSARS protests.  The protests in Abuja have in some cases have got out of hand with suspected hoodlums attacking protesters as well as pro-SARS groups. The situation has often led to clashes that leave several persons injured with vehicles and other property damaged. There have been reports that a protester, who was stabbed by one of such hoodlums, died in a hospital. Around the popular AYA Roundabout where the protesters had planned to block on Monday, armed soldiers were seen patrolling to ensure flow of traffic. They mounted barricades as they tried to manage the situation. There were reports of similar scenarios in other parts of the city as the protesters divide themselves into groups and operate from various locations. Yesterday, Nigerians particularly students have been jubilating and rejoicing, after it was made known in news papers and other news platforms that the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reopening of schools of the federation, after meeting with committee of Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.   After this went viral, the Special Assistant to the Senate President of Nigeria on New Media, Mr Abubakar Sidiq Usman has reacted to it, as he gave more clarifications on it around 10:42pm yesterday night. On his official Twitter handle,he said that all the newspaper reporting that the Federal Government has approved school reopening, have not giving out the precise information on the matter. He said, that is not what the Presidential Task Force or the guidelines said on school reopening. There are still some restrictions to it and the reopening of schools are in phases, and there is no timeline provided for it yet, he said.

COVID-19: Buhari approves full reopening of economy, extend PTF tenure till December

The six-month tenure of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 which is expected to end in September has been extended until the end of December, 2020. President Muhammadu Buhari granted the extension on Thursday, according to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and PTF Chairman, Mr Boss Mustapha. He said In order to address economic, socio-political and health concerns, Buhari had approved Nigeria’s advancement to the third phase of eased restrictions with further amendments. The third phase will last till a time when the epidemic is sufficiently controlled in Nigeria. The Governor of Migori Governor Okoth Obado found himself in the wrong side of the law again after he was named in a multi million scandal.  Okoth who is currently facing a murder charge in the killing of Sharon Otieno together with his children who will be charged with Sh73.4 million graft case. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has criticised the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for dropping Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the list of speakers at its 2020 annual general conference. MURIC, in a statement by its director, Ishaq Akintola, described the NBA’s action as “parochial, myopic and jejune”. The umbrella association for Nigerian lawyers had dropped El-Rufai in response to protests by its members and other rights activists. The protesters had said El-Rufai was unfit to speak before the legal professionals for allegedly failing to serve justice to the Christian-dominated Southern Kaduna people who are being killed by bandits. This is not so as the federal government is yet to decide the date for University reopening. Do not believe any of these fake news. Oshiomhole on Monday paid a visit to the Presidential Villa to meet with Gambari. One of the agendas of the meeting has become public via a video of both walking and saying something to the effect about the upcoming Edo governorship election scheduled for September 19 which build-up has been rancorous with the APC and its main rival, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, going for each other’s jugular. Lots of attention has been drawn today towards the circulating video of the Federal Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, speaking on school reopening nationwide in Nigeria. After seeing this video, many have believed that the Minister has finally approved September 7th, 2020 to be the resumption date for all schools in the country. However, after much research has been done, it is crystal clear that the video was manipulated and that the voice doesn't belong to the Minister. The video appeared to have been recorded way back since 2016, and not this year, 2020; and it appeared that the Minister spoke as regarding another issue entirely, however, was manipulated by some people to distract and confuse people as regarding the reopening of schools in the country. Tomorrow's It appears a lot of Nigerian students are not currently satisfied with the situation of things going around the country. While many may not know, the Nigerian schools most especially the tertiary institutions have been under lock and key for the past 5months.  Earlier this year before coronavirus broke out, there has been series of battle between the Nigerian government and ASUU(Academic Staff Union of Universities) which was not resolved.  Even with that, the coronavirus complicated the whole issue and all tertiary institutions had to come under lock and key.
